How Dan Became an Animal Attendant at Greyhounds as Pets

Meet Dan Dwyer, Animal Attendant at Greyhounds as Pets

Dan completed the ACM20121 Certificate II in Animal Care (Animal Health & Welfare) with AVT and has been making a wonderful impact working at Greyhounds As Pets WA (GAP) since finishing the course!

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Dan to hear about his study experience. In the video, Dan discusses why he chose AVT for his course, shares the highlights of his learning journey, and provides insights into his role as an Animal Attendant at GAP.

I was inspired to work with animals because I grew up an hour north in Bindoon, so I’ve been around animals all my life and I always get along with them. It just made logical sense to me to work with animals.

I chose AVT because they seemed like the most hands-on approach to studying the course. I had spoken to previous vet nurses who had done the course before, and they all said great things, so it just seemed like the right choice for me.

My favourite part of the course was definitely at GAP. I had a great time working there. Cat Haven was great too. The experience all around here and at Cat Haven was just phenomenal.

After finishing the course, I’ve been working at GAP, trying to get as much experience as I possibly can. My main role is taking the dogs out for walks and enrichment sessions in the yards. I also work quite closely with the girls in adoptions, where we process applications and work through matching up the dogs with the people.

The course experience definitely helped. To anyone thinking of studying this course, I say absolutely go for it. If you have any interest in working with animals, then I would absolutely say go for it. There’s no doubt in my mind you’ll have a great time.
