Home » Short Courses » Cystocentesis in Small Animals
This short course provides cystocentesis training for vet nurses, with a strong emphasis on clinical decision-making, preparation and correct technique.
Designed to support safe, accurate cystocentesis in dogs and cats, the course addresses potential risks and complications, so you understand not just how to perform cystocentesis, but how to do it safely and appropriately in practice.
Developed by our own AVT veterinarians, and with input from local Specialist Veterinarians, this micro-credential breaks cystocentesis into simple, practical steps you can apply immediately in practice. If you are WA based, you will also gain recognition towards meeting the requirements for “Advanced Veterinary Nursing – Restricted” under the Veterinary Practice Board of WA framework.

Practical Expectations
Our micro-credentials are thoughtfully designed by experienced veterinary professionals who understand the realities of clinical practice. Our content is intentionally comprehensive – thorough where it needs to be – and created to develop genuine competence, not just surface knowledge.
That’s why each course integrates theory with practical application, including short workplace assessments signed off by your supervising veterinarian.
WA based vet nurses looking to gain recognition as an "Advanced Veterinary Nurse - Restricted" as part of the new Veterinary Practice Board of WA changes.
Experienced veterinary nurses in small animal general, emergency or referral practice who are involved in urine collection and diagnostic procedures.
No cystocentesis experience is required, just a willingness to learn.

The six core chapters focus on developing practical cystocentesis skills that translate directly to safer, more effective patient care in small animal practice, with a strong emphasis on correct technique, preparation and clinical judgement.
This chapter explores the definitions and benefits of cystocentesis, when cystocentesis is appropriate. You’ll consider clinical indications alongside patient factors that influence safe decision-making.
Build a clear understanding of bladder anatomy and normal physiology to support accurate needle placement and reduce procedural risk. This foundational knowledge underpins safe and effective cystocentesis practice.
This chapter focuses on preparing both the patient and the clinical environment before performing cystocentesis. Topics include positioning, restraint considerations and teamwork to support patient welfare and procedural safety.
Learn how ultrasound can be used to assist cystocentesis, including identifying the bladder and improving accuracy and safety. The chapter also discusses limitations and practical considerations in a clinical setting.
This chapter provides a clear, step-by-step walkthrough of the cystocentesis procedure in dogs and cats. We cover both ultrasound guidance and blind (bladder isolation) techniques. Emphasis is placed on correct technique, needle handling and maintaining patient comfort throughout the process.
The final chapter addresses situations where cystocentesis may be contraindicated, explores alternative urine collection methods, and focuses on recognising and preventing potential complications. You’ll learn how to identify issues early and respond appropriately to support safe outcomes in practice.

An AVT micro-credential is a short online course that allows you to develop specialised skills that are in high demand by animal care and veterinary employers and organisations. We have created our micro-credentials to be short, manageable, and affordable so you can easily fit them into your schedule and budget.
Key features of an AVT micro-credential include:
Qualification requirements
To apply, you’ll need to provide evidence of your Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing (or equivalent qualification).
Current employment
These micro-credentials are designed for qualified veterinary nurses working in clinical practice. You’ll be asked to provide details about your current role and workplace as part of your application.
Workplace access
You’ll need access to a veterinary clinic where you can complete the practical components of the course.
Practical assessment and sign-off
Each micro-credential includes a workplace-based practical component. A veterinarian at your clinic will be required to supervise and sign off on your practical tasks to ensure they are completed safely and to industry standard.
To get the most out of your studies, you’ll need a reliable device that you feel confident using. Throughout your course, you’ll be accessing online learning platforms, submitting assessments, downloading resources and working with standard software, so having the right setup will make everything smoother.
We strongly recommend using a laptop, rather than a tablet, as this will give you the best experience when completing assessments and accessing course materials.
While both Windows and Mac devices can be used, we suggest Microsoft Windows as the preferred operating system, as it offers the smoothest compatibility with the software and platforms used throughout your course.
