Vet Nursing Training

At the Vet Nursing Training Centre we offer students the opportunity to complete the National Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. This is the qualification required in Australia to become a qualified and registered Vet Nurse. This qualification is also recognised in some countries outside Australia.

In some states you will not be able to work in a practice caring for animals unless you are studying or have completed this certificate. Apart from enabling you to be employed in a Veterinary Practice, this qualification may assist you to work in a variety of other animal related fields such as wildlife care, zoos and quarantine services. Gaining this qualification may also assist in gaining entry iinto some university courses.

We offer this course in 3 different ways:

Full Time Studies A one year full time course that starting in February each year and finishing in December. Students attend our centre 3 days a week and spend one day a week in a Vet Practice that we arrange.

Part Time Studies This program is designed for students living in Perth who are employed in a practice in some capacity with access to support from the practice with practical training. Students attend our centre once or twice a week when able, but do most of their study in their own time away from our centre using study guides and their text books. There are no formal lessons and the course is self paced. Students may finish within 12 months, but most take 2 - 3 years. The student will gain practical experience within the practice they are associated with and by attending workshops. This program is only available to students who meet the above criteria.

Correspondence Studies

This course is for students who cannot attend our centre. It is suitable for people from outside of Perth, both within Australia and Overseas. This program operates similarly to the Part Time program, except all studies are done away from our centre. Students will need access to a veterinary practice at certain times during their course. This access must be arranged by the student prior to us offering you a place in the course. If you are already working in a practice, you will do your practical training in that practice. If you do not have an arrangement with a practice, either as an employee or volunteer, then you will be required to locate one that will support your training. We do have a package available to assist in locating and approaching a practice.
Students may get all of their practical training in practice, or attend some of our workshops if possible.

Applicants to our full time and correspondence courses may already be working in some role in a veterinary practice or be people who have had no previous training or employment in a veterinary practice. Please note that part time students must be employed or have an arrangement with a practice to join this program. Most of our graduates gain employment soon after finishing the course.
