How we select students for our courses

In selecting students for our programs, our main consideration is their aptitude for working in this field and we do not have strict rules relating to past experience or studies. If you are really interested in becoming a Veterinary Nurse we are keen to provide that opportunity for you.

In selecting students we consider three criteria:

Your ability to study at this level: We look for evidence of ability to study at the Certificate IV level. This may be based on your completion of school or other studies. We do not apply strict rules on what schooling you need to have completed and all students can present evidence of their ability.  For students that do not have evidence of previous studies we may ask you to complete one of our own aptitude assessments that may allow you to demonstrate your ability. These assessments are designed to assess your language, literacy and numeracy skills. We may ask you to take some further background studies if we feel you need extra study experience.

Exposure to Animal Care: We are looking for students with a background involving animals. This may be from experience in farming, pets and other animal related activities. We particularly value exposure veterinary practice in the form of work experience or employment.

However many of our applicants come to us with no exposure to veterinary practice, and if we feel you are a suitable candidate for a place in one or our courses we will arrange for a short period of work experience (30 or 40 hours) in a practice, prior to you joining us.
We consider it important to have some contact with veterinary practice, not so that you are skilled before starting but that you have a realistic expectation of the type of work that they will be doing.

We have an arrangement with many practices who are happy to offer this experience to prospective students and we have a structured program in place to prepare you for the work experience. If you are outside of Western Australia we can contact a practice you nominate and request they participate in this program. Fees do apply for this work experience program

Your suitability to Veterinary Nursing: We are looking for students with the commitment and personality that would likely support working in the industry.

We do receive more applications than places that we have available. If we are not able to offer you a place at the time of your application, we will advise you on the best plan for you to be considered at a later time.

It is difficult for us to assess your likelyhood of being offered a place without reviewing an application with all of your details. We recommend that you submit an application if you are interested in studying with us. We do not charge to review an application, nor are you under any obligation to proceed if offered a place. We try really hard to respond to every application within 10 working days or so.

Our full time program has a fixed start date (February each year). If you are considering this program, the sooner you submit an application, the more time we have to consider any work experience or further studies that may be needed
