Part Time Course

This program is designed for students already employed in a practice or those that have some sort of arrangement with a practice to support their training. If you live in Perth and are not employed in a practice or have an arrangement in place with a practice, you will need to join our full time program. The reason for this is that all of out Perth training placements are occupied by our full time students.

Our part time Veterinary Nursing program runs with students attending classes at our Training Centre. Students can attend any time from 5pm - 8.00 p.m. on a Wednesday evening or on a Tuesday afternoon from 1 - 4 pm. You do not have to attend every week or for the total time (some students will come in after finishing work). We find the more often students attend, the better they do. You may come on both days or just one. Students can start this course at any time of the year.

This is a self-paced study program which is conducted through the use of study guides; enrolling one subject at a time. You work on these study guides using your textbooks whilst in class and during your own study time. There are no formal lectures and when you attend class your progress is reviewed and practical sessions can be organised. You are expected to finish your studies within three years, however students with sufficient time could finish in a one year period. Most students take around 2 years to complete the program. There are around 22 modules (study guides) to complete.

In addition to completing your theory modules, you are required to attend to your practical training in the practice you work or attend. The practical requirements will be reviewed with you upon joining the course, but you will need at least 300 hours in a practice to meet our requirements. Usually this would be done as part of your normal work. If you are not employed, then the practice you have an arrangement with will need to commit to at least this amount of experience.

You are also required to attend several one day workshops held by us at our Training Centre. These include practical sessions in areas such as Anatomy, Surgical Nursing and Radiography.
The workshops are repeated twice throughout the year. You will need to attend on 8 days total during your course.

You can apply for entry into this course at any time of the year and start at any time. Most applicants employed in a Veterinary Practice will generally be offered an immediate start in the program if they meet our other selection criteria.
