Recognition of Prior Learning

Mutual Recognition of AQF Qualifications

It is our policy to recognise and give credit for any previous completed study or qualifications issued by a registered training organisation in an accredited program. It is also our policy to make students aware of this fact and also to advise students of their rights to gain credit for previous learning or experience where relevant. Recognition of Prior learning is to be encouraged and adopted as standard policy. Each student should consider carefully their past training and experience against the components of the training package being offered. Both practical experience and theoretical education may enable a student to achieve a qualification without having to repeat training and assessment of skills they already possess.

For example, previous study may result in direct exemptions for knowledge based modules, work experience may result in exemption from particular units that are assessed in the workplace or at our workshops.

* What to do if you think you may be eligible for some recognition of prior learning

If you think there are some components of the training and assessment where you already possess the skill and the knowledge that underpins that skill, you should discuss this with your tutor at the beginning of your program. The first step is to review the associated unit or module with your own experience or previous training. We have the full program on the web or can supply a paper based copy on request. You should then document your skills and knowledge against  particular outcomes in the course. Finally you should have this experience or learning reviewed. A review is usually conducted by a personal interview with designated staff at AVT. It is also possible to arrange this via the telephone with postal or fax information to support your claim.

* Expenses of having recognition of prior learning considered

Should you have a direct credit, for example you have completed a similar or identical module or unit at another training institution, there is no charge for processing this exemption. We charge a fee of around $40 per unit to consider evidence against a particular unit or module. This will be discussed with you prior to any process being started. Should credit not be granted, then we deduct this fee from any fee associated with you enrolling in the unit or module.

* What sort of evidence may be required?

Anything that supports your case. This could be documents, written reports, photographs, letters. In actual fact anything that provides proof of your skills. Where direct evidence is not available, then the tutor will usually ask you to discuss examples of your previous experience. It is not an exam!

You are welcome to bring a supporting person with you to any interview that has been set up.
